Waseda University
Established more than a century ago by Shigenobu Okuma, scholar and government leader, Waseda University is a private, coeducational institution of higher learning. Founded as a college with three departments under the old system of Japanese higher education, it has grown to become a comprehensive university with two senior high schools and a College of Technology. Combined with the best library in Asia, Waseda University is recognised as one of the premier universities in Japan and Asia.
Since its establishment, Waseda has had an esprit de corps based on three traditions--"upholding the independence of learning", "promoting the utilization of practical knowledge" and "creating good citizenship". This Waseda essence is shared by the more than half a million alumni who sustain and support the university. Waseda's commitment to learning is reflected in the achievements of its graduates including many creative and productive scholars and educators who distinguish themselves in their respective fields of specialization.
The University has four campuses, three of which are located in Shinjuku Ward in metropolitan Tokyo and within walking distance of each other. These are the Nishi-Waseda, Toyama and Okubo campuses, which total 45.9 acres. A fourth campus is located approximately 40 kilometres from the three campuses in Tokorozawa City, Saitama Prefecture, on 86.7 acres. Other academic, sports and recreational facilities are located in the Tokyo metropolitan area and Chiba, Nagano, Niigata, Saitama and Shizuoka Prefectures for use by students, faculty and staff.
