Keio University

Keio University is a private, co-educational university. It was founded in 1858 by Yukichi Fukuzawa, a highly respected intellectual leader of the era. Keio is the oldest institution of higher education in Japan and recognised as one of the finest universities in the country.

Since 1898, Keio has offered a comprehensive educational program that begins with grammar school. The Keio Gijuku educational corporation provides governance for the University and its affiliated educational institutions. By tradition, the president of Keio Gijuku also serves as the University President.

From Fukuzawa's Dutch Studies school to the present, Keio has promoted interchange with overseas institutions and has an active body of foreign students.
