The total number of cases worldwide includes zero cases in Japan. There were initial reports of five possible cases, but these turned out to be false alarms. As an indication of the seriousness with which Japanese authorities are taking the threat from SARS, it is reassuring that they reacted so actively to potential cases.

On Saturday 17th May, it was revealed that a Taiwanese doctor who returned to Taiwan after a holiday in Japan had been admitted to hospital with SARS. The Taiwanese government and the hospital authorities both apologised to Japan. The Japanese authorities again have reacted rapidly, and all locations in Japan where the doctor visited or may have visited have been disinfected thoroughly, and all persons with whom he had or may have had contact are being traced and monitored for signs of the illness.

To date, there are still no confirmed cases in Japan, and the authorities are being highly proactive in their treatment of threats and potential cases, so all travellers to Japan can be sure that all possible actions are being taken.
