The Inter-University Center
The Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies is the premiere American program for the teaching of advanced Japanese. First established in Tokyo in 1963, the Center now resides in Yokohama. The Center is governed by an Inter-University Committee of scholars representing 16 universities with strong, established graduate programs in Japanese studies.
For more than 35 years, the Center has been dedicated to providing advanced language training to more than 1200 leading scholars, government officials, and business men and women. Many graduates occupy positions of leadership in their respective disciplines and professions.
The Center offers a 10-month intensive program and summer courses. The ten month program covers development of competence in constructing complex utterances, using Japanese accurately and appropriately in social settings, and expressing and understanding Japanese on general topics. The second half of the program centres on developing specialized language skills for academic or professional goals. The morning sessions of the Inter-University Center's summer program are focused on advanced spoken Japanese and are designed to enable each participant to acquire the ability to express his or her thoughts and opinions in a correct and appropriate manner. In addition to written and computer-based text materials selected from the regular Center curriculum, video-based documentaries, commentaries, and TV dramas are also used.
